There was so much tension in the house, as of late, that it made Victoria want to scream. The Ministry of Magic was trying to snuff out Lord Voldemort and his followers more and more as the days went by. This action alone made her mother more on edge than usual. It was a scary thought to know that all their lives could be wiped out if they made a single mistake. This was wearing on her mother, but it didn’t show in her pretty visage at the kitchen table.
“Don’t play with your food.” She said in her usual stern manner as her hazel gaze shifted from Victoria’s plate up to her daughters face. They shared the same hued eyes, for the most part; her daughter’s were a little lighter as of late. Victoria looked up at her mother and offered up a soft smile. She loved her mother dearly and would do anything and everything to make her proud of her. But now was not the time for trying to make her mother proud, instead she should listen to her and not cause any problems.
“Yes mother.” She said, vocals soft and sweet. She picked up a little bit of food on her fork and stuck it into her mouth. She really didn’t want to eat; it wasn’t the taste or appearance of the food, seeing that the house elves always cooked their meals with extra care and a gifted hand, but instead the fact that her father lay wounded upstairs in bed. She knew he would get better, but it was still something she worried about.
Placing her fork down on her plate she pushed it away and watched as it vanished back down to the kitchen where it would be cleaned. Her mother had done the same thing minutes before with about the same amount of food left on the plate. She knew her mother worried more than about her husbands’ health. Her son, Victoria’s brother, was currently with Lord Voldemort preparing for a rather dangerous mission; she had no clue what the mission was, but any mission with the aurors and hit wizards being out was a dangerous one.
“I am going to check on your father.” Lenore stood up and met the gaze of her daughter. “Be sure you and your friend are quiet. We do not wish to upset your father.” And with that said she moved out of the room with the grace and elegance that had been passed on to her daughter. Both she and her daughter also shared the same slender, yet curvy figure. If it weren’t for the fact that her mother now looked much older because of the recent accident they could probably pass for sisters.
Victoria tapped her manicured nails on the hard wood table, not moving from the table just yet. She had to be strong for her mother, just like her mother had to be strong for her. There would be a time when one of their family members would not return from a mission and that would be the time to cry. For now, with everyone remaining in one piece, there was no need to cry. Crying, after all, would just mess up her makeup.
After a few minutes of sitting alone in silence, she stood up and made her way to the front parlor to wait on Selena. Her body was clothed in a thin cotton dress of a forest green hue. The dress had thin straps and came down to her knees, being neither flowy nor skin-tight. Her mother did not approve of any female wearing jeans for any reason, well, unless they were doing something that was unladylike, like Quidditch. Her mother didn’t approve of that either but she let it slide, figuring she would save an argument for something a little more important. It would just be a waste of energy, which neither of them had much of as of late.
Ebony locks were curled that day, falling just past her shoulder. How she hated when people didn’t have their hair done, or played with it all the time. Maybe that was why people like Sirius Black and James Potter made her skin crawl. They were always messing with their hair. Worse off, they were not messing with it to fix it, which was acceptable, but instead were playing with it to mess it up further. What kind of girl could ever find that attractive? Oh yes, Lily Evans. She found James somehow attractive with his cocky attitude and horribly messy hair.
She stood slowly, the light of the windows warming up her pale arms. It was a lovely day outside and it would not hurt to wait for Selena out there. At least then she could escape from the stuffy home where she felt the need to avoid her father’s room unless he asked for her by name. She opened the heavy dark wood front door and stepped outside into the bright afternoon sun. She did wonder what Selena and she would talk about. They were not the best of friends, but were close enough to invite her over in an attempt to escape from her mothers clingy attachment to her when her father was sleeping after she had preformed didn’t healing spells on him. Voldemort found her especially useful for that gift. He often sent any injured to their home where they would be treated like family and offered up a guest room for as long as they needed.
A soft breeze ruffled her hair and dress and she closed her eyes taking in the scent of the flowers and trees that grew on their land. It was such a nice day, if only she could share it with someone she really cared about. At that moment a rather handsome Gryffindor popped into her mind causing her heart to skip a beat. No one could know that she had the deepest crush on a Gryffindor, let alone one that was not of pure blood status. There was just something about him that kept her guessing. He was mysterious. Oh how she wished that Remus would notice her…
No one would ever be able to know about that crush, not even her brother, Cyril, whom she told everything to. She opened her eyes feeling someone’s gaze upon her. This was her secret and she would not let anyone in on it. Her face fell into that stoic gaze that the rest of her family was able to put on so easily; it was their mask and it protected them from others intruding on their thoughts. The only problem Victoria had when it came to hiding her emotions were her damned eyes. They were, clearly, the window to her soul.

Shining glass reflected the physique of a young girl, staring with judgmental chocolate eyes into the sheet of glass. A slender girl the age of 17 stood in front of the magically elongated mirror, clad in a tight-fitting purple tee-shirt, a frayed light wash denim skirt, and black leggings. To complete the ensemble, a thick black belt with purple rhinestones sat nicely on her hips. Her crow black hair was held up by a claw, giving off the relaxed but beautiful look. Along with the outfit, black nails with a purple stripe were necessary. Selena was officially ready to head out.
Selena gave one last glance in the mirror, deciding nothing else could be done. Of course, she always had to look her best, but somehow this time things seemed more important. Selena would be hanging out at a fellow Slytherin’s house today, and she had to look absolutely perfect. If she didn’t, what would happen to her perfect reputation in her House that she had worked so hard to obtain? Everything would crash, her world, her life, everything she had worked for. And that would not be good at all. Who would lead the Slytherins to domination this year in the house cup? Not someone who dresses sloppy.
She twirled around gracefully, dancing in the middle of her room. A soft rap came from the door. “Come in!” Selena sang, a smile on her face. A wrinkly old creature, about 2 ½ feet tall shuffled into the room, clad in a very dirty dishrag. Her name was Tanna, and she was the Belvidere’s house elf. Tanna and her family had been in the Belvidere bloodline for as long as anyone could remember, and they always did their job. Tanna’s main job wasn’t to help the whole family, however, she was assigned especially to Selena.
“Yes?” Selena questioned, eyeing Tanna carefully as she abruptly stopped spinning. Selena didn’t care much for Tanna. Anything unclean and messy wasn’t a good thing in Selena’s eyes. She had to be nice to her, though, because without Tanna, she would live in debris. “Ms,” The house elf croaked, her gravelly voice echoing in the spacious room, “Ms. Victoria will be expecting you soon. You should probably get going.” Tanna walked over and scooped up a few dirty clothes Selena had left laying on the floor. Tanna’s batlike ears flapped around as she wandered around the room.
“Yes, alright.” Selena sighed, walking over to the balcony. As she looked over, a nice breeze came, forcing the trees to sway back and forth. A small bird flew by, darting around, trying to find its family. Although it was just a miniscule bird, Selena could relate. She was the bird, trying to find her family. Although she could find solace in Victoria, it just wasn’t the same. No Slytherin had true friends; they were too secretive to be able to hold one. Selena needed a true family, someone she could look up to. Most Slytherins, however, never really had a true family. If they were really Slytherins, their family was probably with the Dark Lord. And if their family was with the Dark Lord, that is where their allegiance lies, not with their family.
She had been crushed by her family once, but not again. Turning away from the balcony, Selena walked toward her door. Her slender arm reached for the ornate knob, but before she pulled on it, Selena stopped. “Tanna,” She asked, rotating around, “Are my parents home?” Tanna looked up at the girl, tears welling up in her large blue eyes. She grabbed her ragged dress and brought it up to her eyes, drying them. “No, Mistress.” Tanna sobbed, staining the ugly ragged sack. “They won’t be home for awhile. There is a big mission.” Selena rolled her eyes, understanding completely. Of course there was a great mission. There always was. ‘Maybe this one is crucial.’ A small voice said. Selena hated it when her conscious was right. “Alright.” She sighed, accepting the inevitable. Selena gave up on the fact that her parents would be returning today, pulled her door open with dismay. ‘Maybe Victoria’s house will be better.’ Selena thought as she made her way down the staircase.
Selena climbed down the vast staircase carefully, not bothering to apparate. She could do that outside. Descending the stairs, a white piece of parchment caught Selena’s eye. It was folded carefully, left on the banister. She opened it, wondering what it could possibly say.
Dearest Selena,
We didn’t want to worry you last night, but we had to leave on an urgent mission. The Dark Lord is calling all of his followers to a special meeting, possibly the most important one we will ever get to go to. Oh, how I wish you could join us. Maybe soon, perhaps, right after you graduate. We can get you branded and ready to go! It will be the perfect opportunity for our family to get together again, joined in unity. We probably will not be back until after you leave for school, but you can apparate, and you know your way around. You’re a big girl now, an adult. And being an adult comes with immense responsibility, like looking out for yourself. We’ll write soon!
Love,
Mum and Dad.
Selena looked at the parchment in utter disgust. How could they do this to her? Just leave, not caring if she made it off to school alright. Nice one, great parents they are. One of Selena’s weaknesses was controlling her anger. Usually, she was very good at it, and you wouldn’t even know something was wrong. Now, with her house completely empty, she was infuriated. Selena pulled out her wand, gripping it with all her might. Tapping the parchment, she whispered, “Incendio.” Immediately, the parchment burst into flames. Each flame licked the paper, fully enjoying the taste. Selena dropped the sheet onto the hard marble, watching it slowly burn to a crisp. A satisfied smile spread across her perfect lips. Stepping over the ashes, Selena headed toward the door.
Selena grabbed up her purple bag, hoisting it back over her shoulder. She pulled open the large door and stepped out into the warm August breeze. Her jet black waves caught in the wind, letting the few loose strands dance around her face. Selena turned around abruptly on the spot, disappearing into thin air. The feeling of apparition was something you never really got used to. It was as if you were being sucked through an extremely tight tube, allowing no air into your body. But right as the feeling came, it vanished. Selena blinked a few times, looking around at her surroundings. There, on the porch of a large mansion, sat just the girl she had came to see. Victoria.

Victoria knew nothing about the life of her friend or about her family, mostly because they avoided uncomfortable topics like that. She knew from her talks with her family and her few encounters with other Death Eaters that her parents were also among the numbers of Voldemort followers. She also knew her father, or at least what he looked like, the one time he came to their house to pick up a certain item for the Dark Lord. She wasn’t sure what it was because it was wrapped up in a package with numerous spells on it to keep preying eyes off. It clearly was something of great importance, or at least something that needed to be kept a secret.
The wind lightly whipped past her, long raven locks flowing out behind her getting caught of in the breeze. Her dress fluttered about her slender frame as she watched the yard for Selena. She was forced to finally lift a hand to brush her hair from out from in front of her light hazel optics, looking more gold than anything in the light of the sun. It was an odd thing how different environments caused her eyes to change colors, though she knew it occurred with most people’s eyes. It just…amused her.
She stood and took a few steps down the porch so that she was standing under the section of the house where her parents room was. She could hear cursing coming from the open window, it was her father’s voice and clearly he was upset about something. Maybe it was the letter that they received from another Death Eater earlier that morning. He had been sleeping and it seemed Mother hadn’t given it to him until now.
“I will be going and that is final.” He said in a rather harsh tone to his wife she figured. She knew that the letter had to do with some sort of mission or meeting or something of the like. It was not a good idea for her Father to leave his bed in his condition, but with his love for the Dark Lord he didn’t want to risk falling out of his good graces because he was not at the meeting.
“Alright, my love, I will get our things ready and we will leave in a few hours. I will send in one of the servants to help you get dressed and change your bandages.” And with that silence fell from the window and only the sound of birds could be heard. They sat and hopped about in the yard looking for bugs to eat. It was a relaxing sight to behold, especially after over hearing that he parents would be leaving her for a little while again. At least she hoped that her mother would be back in time to send her off to school. She had a feeling that they both would be seeing no matter what they were always there to see her off, even if it meant dropping her off at the station early and having to leave on a mission right after.
Upon hearing the cries of birds and the flapping of wings, she knew that someone had apparated into the yard. She did hope that it wasn’t another Death Eater coming to whisk her parents away. As her gaze met that of Selena’s she couldn’t help but smile. She walked as quickly as possible, though keeping her movements graceful, toward the female. Her heels sank slightly into the grass.
Coming to within feet of her, she found herself unsure how to greet her. She knew a hug was probably out of the question. Slytherin’s tended not to show their affection for one another through such actions, at least not that she had seen. Sure there were a few couples within their house that did such, but it was never done between friends; seeing that Victoria had few friends at Hogwarts, or anywhere for that matter, she wasn’t exactly sure how to act. It was then that she took on the charm and charisma that her mother had worked over and over into her.
“It is a pleasure to see you, Selena.” She offered up a bright smile. “I do hope your trip went well. How has your summer been thus far?” It was proper to invite the young lady into the house and out of the sun, and so she did just that. “Shall we go inside? I do have to warn you to keep things down seeing that my father is rather upset being bedbound.” Him being bedbound wasn’t going to be the case for long, though, seeing that he would be leaving in the blink of an eye to go to his first ‘love’, Voldemort.
It was at that moment that he blood began to boil; the Dark Lord would always come before her in the eyes of her father. All she wanted to do was make her parents proud and the only way to get even a small amount of such pride was through her devotion to the Dark Lord. She could never put her family before him, so was she meant to be a Death Eater? Her beliefs varied so greatly from that of her family that she was afraid that she would never be able to make her parents proud; she would never take the mark. This anger, though, was not visible outwardly, instead she wore the mask that she often put on when she was around Lupin. Hiding her emotions was best in situations where she wasn't alone.

A nice breeze swirled around Selena, blowing the frayed hems of her skirt around. She regained her balance from apparating, thanking God internally that she didn’t fall over in the view of Victoria. If she was seen as clumsy in front of Victoria, word may get out and she will be known as the Hogwarts klutz. Although Victoria was a good friend, one of the closest ones Selena had, you never knew with a Slytherin. Selena straightened her belt and made sure she looked presentable. If she wasn’t looking presentable, Hell could freeze over.
Selena watched as Victoria made her way over to her across the lush green lawn, fresh from yesterday’s rain. If you were visiting the area, you would have never guessed it had rained, the sky was spotless. The vast blue stretched as far as the eye could see, like a blanket over the world. The only traces of the rainfall were the few puddles down by the road.
Selena loved it when it rained. Something about the sense of a crying sky. In a way, it was sad, like when you use sidewalk chalk and all your images are washed away. The rain can ruin your hair, something Selena spends hours on sometimes. But the rain can also bring happiness. It brings life to the plants and animals. The smell of rain in the forest makes it seem more alive. The fresh scent was one of Selena’s favorite smells in the world. Rain also sounded very cool. Every time it rains, it sounds different.
Victoria then approached Selena, her beautiful locks shining in the sunlight. “It is a pleasure to see you, Selena.” Victoria said, smiling. Selena returned the smile warmly, nodding, indicating she felt the same. “I do hope your trip went well. How has your summer been thus far? “Shall we go inside? I do have to warn you to keep things down seeing that my father is rather upset being bedbound.” Selena nodded, remembering Victoria’s father’s condition. “My summer has been… relaxed.” Selena replied, a sense of longing in her voice. “I have missed you, V. You don’t know how drab my house can be when Mrs. Bermel is gone and Tanna is the only one you can talk to.” She said with a laugh. Selena always felt comfortable around Victoria. They had known each other since they were very young, and it was a joy to be able to still talk to her.
Selena remembered perfectly the day they had been sorted into Slytherin. It was wonderful, seeing as her parents would probably disown her if she hadn’t been placed in Slytherin, and they were both in the same house. She could picture their smiling faces as they sat down at the long table on the far left side of the Great Hall. The Slytherin table. They had done everything together. They had walked to classes, they had hung out in the common room, and Selena had gone out of her way to watch Victoria in her Quidditch games. Although they have gotten much older, they still were good friends. And Selena didn’t want that to change.
“How has your summer been?” Selena questioned as they made their way to Victoria’s house. Her feet squished into the grass, creating a ‘gloppy’ sound. Other than the girls movement and their voices, it was completely silent outside. To Selena, it felt like the calm before the storm. She knew Voldemort was up to something, and every death eater that was in his close circle would be called, that being her parents. He was planning something big, according to Tanna, and Selena was morbidly curious as to what he was planning. Although it wasn’t her business, she really wanted to know. Maybe Tanna knew more than she would tell. Either way, Selena was going to find out, that was certain. Between the two of them, they would be able to find out, no problem.

It was indeed a lovely day outside, and frankly one that shouldn’t be wasted sitting inside the large manor that Victoria called home. And yet it was far too humid for her to want to remain outside for too long. She hated the feeling when the humidity clung to her porcelain hued skin, making her feel as if she just got out of a rather unpleasant shower. The sun was shining and the sky was clear, which would hopefully cleanse the ground of the rest of the muck and water that caused her heels the sink ever deeper into the turf.
Flipping her curled locks over her shoulder she couldn’t help but smile seeing the same hued locks on her friends head. When they were little they looked a lot more alike than they did now. They both had the same ebony locks and light brown eyes in the sun. Their skin complexions were closer then also, and it was true at times that her mother had a hard time telling the little girls apart. They acted much like each other then and thought the same… And with time Victoria get four inches taller than her best friend and her skin became fairer, much like her fathers. But it was far more than their looks changing that caused them to be so…different. Victoria knew that deep down she had changed in manners that Selena hadn’t.
She could never talk to Selena about these things. She could not risk it getting back to her family, and frankly she didn’t want to lose her friend over things that might change later on. Who knows…maybe she only thought that purebloods were the same as any other blood state at the moment because she wanted to make herself feel better about liking Remus. He was a halfbood, and yet he was the smartest, sweetest, and most handsome boy she had ever met. Oh she wished there was some way that she could talk to Selena about this kind of thing… Maybe she could, but without using his name and saying he was pureblood.
A soft laugh escaped her slightly parted plump lips. “Relaxed is a good way to put it.” She knew what her friend meant when she used that word. It generally meant that she was left alone and her parents were off doing something for Voldemort. Her own parents would be leaving within a few hours, and with that she knew that she might never see them again. This realization had finally sunk in when her father was dragged into their house late at night by two other Death Eaters. She shook her head, curls falling in front of her face, as she tries to clear those horrid thoughts from her mind.
After a moment, she let her gaze fall upon her friend once more. She lifted a slender hand to brush her hair back behind her shoulders so that she could see her clearly. “I have missed you also, Lena.” She smiled hearing her call her by her nickname. It had been so long since she had heard it and it sounded really nice. “Believe me, I know the feeling. I am guessing your parents are off to this meeting also.” She looked toward her parent’s window, which had been shut. Well that was a rather bummer seeing she would not be able to spy on them and try to find out exactly what was going on.
It was such a relief to be sorted into Slytherin, not just because her childhood friend had been, but because her parents would think her a disappointment for the rest of her life if she hadn’t. She would be disowned and kicked out of the house, much like Sirius. She had met some nice people through her house, but she knew that there could be no trust built between them. A Slytherin’s loyalty was to their families’ first, if they were not followers of the Dark Lord, or to Voldemort first. Friends might come second; generally, though, most Slytherins put themselves before their friends.
“My summer has been rather interesting, to say the least.” She climbed the stairs to the door and pushed it open, allowing Selena to enter first. She followed close behind, slipping her shoes off by the door. One of the house elves or the maid would take care of them. “I mean life is boring for the most part around here, but it seems more often than not we have one of the Death Eaters being treated upstairs in one of the guest rooms. I guess this war is really starting.” She sighed after that statement. She didn’t know if she wished to be a Death Eater or not, but she did know that if it were up to her parents she wouldn’t have a choice in the matter.
Victoria moved through the richly decorated manor and made her way to a rather comfortable sitting room, though it was indeed still decorated with every expense possible without looking tacky or overly accessorized. She sat down on the couch and looked up at Selena. “Please make yourself at home. Would you like some tea?” And right after those words left her lips a silver tea set appeared on the table in front of them. She had made sure that the elves were aware that she was to have a guest and to make sure tea was ready as soon as she stepped into the house.
“How have your parents been?” She questioned, folding her hands in her lap. “I haven’t heard much about them from my parents, other than when they were at the meetings and the like. They don’t really tell me much, and seeing I haven’t talked to Cyril in a while…well, my information well is drying up.” She looked about her as if she were afraid she was being watched. Upon seeing no one she scooted closer to her friend. “Do you know what this meeting is about?”

As they crossed Victoria’s lawn, Selena felt a sense of reunion. Selena had missed all of her friends, but she relied on Victoria’s presence. It had been two months since school let out, and Selena hadn’t really seen any of her friends since, Victoria included. She was thankful for this time before school started that she could just hang out, no stress of the upcoming year hovering over them. Happiness had been in short supply for her since the summer started, what with her parents being away every second and all, so Selena hoped that today would bring some of that back to her.
A smile flashed over Selena’s delicate face, the corners of her cherry red lips turning upward. She hadn’t heard her nickname in so long, but she loved it. It felt like a double identity. When people called her Selena, it was more of a formal meeting, not really much of a friendly relationship. When she was called Lena, it made her feel more connected with the person. It amazed Selena how much one little nickname could make a person feel completely different than they had already felt. Only her closest friends knew of that nickname, which drew Selena closer to those people.
Selena glanced in the same direction, hearing the soft thud of a window shutting. Rolling her eyes, she replied, “Of course they are. They are never home anymore.” A hint of hurt leaked through Selena’s soft voice, making her sound vulnerable. She internally kicked herself, hating what she had just done. Vulnerable leads to weakness, and Selena wasn’t weak. If she made herself even look a bit weak, bad things could happen. Weakness wasn’t in her gene pool.
They climbed the stairs leading to Victoria’s house. As Selena climbed, flashbacks of old memories came to her. She had sat on this very step watching her friend zoom around on a broom, frightened for Victoria’s life. Selena was one of those girls who had always found it much nicer to be grounded. Flying just wasn’t her thing. As she looked at the step, she could see a little sign etched into the concrete. It was the little secret sign they had made up when they were kids. It was a small serpent coiling into a small heart. It was their little ‘club’ sign. The girls had once talked about getting it as a tattoo somewhere. So many things had changed, it was unbelievable.
Victoria had pushed the door open, allowing Selena to go in first. She nodded and headed through the door. An odd but pleasant sent wafted through the spacious halls, making Selena feel at home. Selena slid her feet daintily out of her shoes by the door, waiting for Victoria to lead the way into whatever room they would be hanging out in. Selena always liked Victoria’s house, it seemed like a home away from home. She used to run around these halls, pretending to rule over all the goblins. They had called it ‘Ruler.’ No, Selena wasn’t very good at naming things. That was probably why her pet bunny, Wiggle, ran away last week. You would have too if your mommy named you Wiggle.
Selena sighed along with her friend, accepting the inevitable. No, she hadn’t had Death Eaters tromping around her house all the time; her parents were the ones doing the tromping. Selena didn’t want the war too start, she felt like it was too soon. She was about to enter her last year of Hogwarts, her last year of freedom. After that, she was destined to become something she tried to shy away from, being a Death Eater. That was something Selena never wanted to be. She did know that she could be useful to Voldemort, what with her being an Animagus, but she wanted to live her own life. Selena had been raised to fear Voldemort, but to hold him with highest respect. At the height of Wizarding power, of course people would bow down to you. Selena just wasn’t really ready to submit herself now, or possibly ever.
Selena followed Victoria through the maze of a house to a lavishly decorated sitting room, reminding Selena a bit of an old film. She watched as the tray magically appeared in front of them, nostalgically reminding Selena of her beautiful castle, Hogwarts. She missed the place dearly, counting down the days until she could return to those hallowed halls. Not only is its location beautiful, but the architecture itself is exquisite. She grabbed a porcelain teacup off the silver platter and sipped it, savoring the warm liquid that soothed her parched throat.
In reply to Victoria’s question about her parents, Selena just shrugged. “You know as much about them as I do. They are rarely home, so all I know is they are going to the meeting as well.” Selena smiled mischievously, getting ready to dish on the information that she already knew.
“Well,” She started in a hushed tone, leaning in towards her friend, “This morning when I was getting ready, Tanna came in to tell me that my parents were leaving again. Of course, I cared nothing of it until she mentioned this extremely important meeting. That was what caught my attention.” Selena was on fire. Gossiping was one of her favorite pastimes, and she was very good at it. Once you got her started, it was hard to make her stop.
“I asked her what it was about, and of course she really didn’t know.” Selena continued. “I followed her out of the room, hearing her mutter about ‘poor Mudbloods and blood traitors’. I think that those are whom the Dark Lord will be targeting, and whom others should be worrying about. Quite frankly, though, all people care about are guarding their own arse, so they aren’t paying much attention to others. What do you think?”

There were few people at Hogwarts that Victoria could really think of that she missed. Of course, Selena was at the top of the list, and at the bottom, well, Remus Lupin. That was one of the main reasons why she wanted school to start so badly. It had been so long since she had seen the sweet boy that she couldn’t wait to just catch one of his smiles; a smile that she would be forbidden from ever returning. Oh she was just one love sick puppy. She would have to push those thoughts deep down inside of her to keep her from getting all depressed and cursing her family for being who and what they were. Do not get her wrong, she loved her family and her heritage; she just didn’t like the fact that she was forbidden from caring for those that were deemed under her. She was to marry someone like Luscius Malfoy, and her parents were rather upset to hear that he and Narcissa were dating.
The hurt that leaked out in her friends vocals made Victoria’s insides twist. It was so hard to know that her friend was in so much pain and knowing that there was nothing she could do about it. Victoria was lucky that her mother was merely the healer for the Death Eaters and was always almost always home. She did miss her brother dearly, but she was sure he would return sometime in the near future to see them, probably not her seeing she was to be off to Hogwarts very soon.
Hogwarts… Oh how she missed the feeling of being within the cold stone walls. How she never minded having to go all the way down to the bottom floor in order to get to the dungeon that was their common room. And never could she explain to one that had never been to Hogwarts how at home it was to be within their common room, though she was sure if she had had actual friends it would have been cozier. But she had Selena and she did hope that she would always have the girl. She knew she would as long as her deepest secrets and desires would remain unknown to her.
There were so many memories that clung to this manor, both good and bad, and each time Victoria moved through various rooms she always seemed to be overtaken by them. She could see her father picking her up and twirling her about after she had transformed her first teacup as a child. He was so proud of her at that moment. She could see Selena and herself running through the house chasing the house elves and trying to ‘vanquish’ them. She could also hear her mothers vocals clear as they day they escaped her lips when she informed her that she had been accepted to Hogwarts. Her father wasn’t there that day, nor her brother, they were off doing whatever it was they did during their bonding time.
Oh and dearest Cyril. There were so many fond memories of the two of them casting hexes at each other throughout the house, leaving a wake of disaster as they went. He had been the one to teach her how to ride a broom when she was little, and the reason why she broke her arm falling off the broom. He also was always the one who encouraged her to do things that she probably would never have done without him pushing. He had been the Quidditch Captain when he was in school and she was now attempting to follow in his steps. Once again, she had fallen short and was still just the Seeker, but she was sure to win the Quidditch cup that year, something her brother had never been able to accomplish.
A soft frown came to her lips as she listened to Selena talk about her parents. It really was sad to hear that she had not been around them lately. “Well, once you become a Death Eater I am sure you will be by their side.” She had no clue that the female had the same doubts that she had about becoming one of the Dark Lord’s followers. Their doubts were for different reasons but it would have been comforting to know that she was not the only one that was unsure of her future.
Moving ever closer to her friend she was ready to hear all she had to tell. This was just like old times! She picked up her teacup though did not drink a drop of the liquid as she listened to every last detail, soaking it all in. When her friend was finally finished she sat back and stared up at the ceiling, thinking on her question. When she finally looked back at Selena, her visage was rather emotionless. “Yes, people are only afraid of what will happen to themselves, and possibly to their families. If that is really what the Dark Lord wants, we all know that is what will happen. I would hate to be a blood traitor more than a muggle at this particular moment. From what I have overhead between my parents is that they are getting the worst of it. There is no hex too horrid to use on one that betrays his blood, as my father put it.”
She sipped her tea, unsure how to ask the next question she wished to ask. Was it right to ask it? Whether it was right or not, she knew she had to ask her friend to see if she was the only one that felt that way. She placed her teacup down and turned to face Selena head on. “Do you ever feel that our lives and our future has already been determined for us?” She paused, unsure if that was the best way to put it. “I mean…that our parents have already decided what we are to do with our lives and who we should marry and what we should think…and so on.”

Selena sipped her tea, watching her friend listen intently to what she was saying. Her dark brown eyes followed Victoria’s, wondering what she was thinking about. Selena glanced around the room, looking at all the little baubles and trinkets. A small, shiny object caught her eye. It was a miniature kitten Selena and Victoria had picked up on one of their ventures to Egypt. When they were very young, Selena’s parents traveled much more than they do now. Most summers, Selena’s family would go on a trip, varying from the Caribbean, Japan, or Seattle. They had been just about everywhere, and most of the time they had taken Victoria with them.
Every time they had gone on a trip, Selena and Victoria had gotten a little trinket to remember the trip by. This little Egyptian cat came from one of their ventures to the Pyramids, one of the Seven Wonders of the Muggle world. A small smile graced Selena’s cherry lips, though it was nostalgic.
Selena returned her attention back to Victoria, trying to comprehend what she had just said. Selena had in no way ever wanted to become a Death Eater, and hopefully she never would be. ‘Oh, she doesn’t know about that.’ Selena thought. Hiding things from Victoria wasn’t hard at all; Selena hid almost her whole life from people. No one really knew the real her, and she wasn’t even so sure.
Listening intently to what was coming out of Victoria’s lips, Selena feared for the worst. At least she had a good view on what her friend felt the outcome would be. Maybe she was on the same side. Selena did feel that the muggle borns and blood traitors had it out for them, and that was very good in her book. She didn’t totally understand, however, why Victoria would be taking that side. To Selena, Victoria had always seemed so… different, like she wouldn’t take the crap they through at the world, even if it was towards the invaluables.
Selena had to agree, though. Voldemort did have a plan, and even if it did put their lives in danger, they would have to follow it. If they didn’t, dire consequences could be waiting for them. It was just a matter of time until they were branded. She sipped her tea again, wondering if that really was her destiny, and if she had to actually follow it. Hopefully, she wouldn’t have to, but Selena really didn’t have much say in what was going to happen to her or her family. Her parents had already made their decision and they were obviously going to stick to it. Even though Selena still wasn’t so sure, her parents would probably make her follow them anyway.
Selena watched Victoria’s brows furrow, wondering what thought could disrupt her perfect façade. Selena followed suit, placing her teacup on the silver tray, raising her eyebrows in confusion toward her friend, wondering what was coming next. As the words came out o Victoria’s mouth, Selena felt as if her scrambled thoughts had been put into true, thought out sentences. She glanced down at her lap, twisting her hands around nervously. She nodded slowly.
“It’s like we have no decisions in life, they make them for us.” Biting her lip, Selena wondered if it was really right to say this to Victoria? It might bite her in the arse if she did. “I…” Selena paused, daring herself to go on. “I don’t want to be a Death Eater.” She whispered, afraid that someone could be eavesdropping. Selena leaned in closer to Victoria, lowering her voice a bit more. “I don’t think I want to get branded, I don’t want to be his puppet.” After she had gotten that off her chest, Selena felt so much lighter, like the weight had been taken off of her shoulders.

Oh yes, there was nothing better than the trips they used to take when they were younger. Victoria did hope that they would be able to go on one this year, though it was probably a hope that would never become reality. They both could head out to some place over the winter holiday seeing that neither of their parents were ever around much. Or Selena could come over and stay at her manor over the Christmas holiday. At least then they both would have someone to spend it with. Then again Victoria was getting far ahead of herself with these thoughts. They still had to head back to Hogwarts and work on their studies and once the holiday time came closer she would invite the other, after asking her mother for permission that is.
To be honest, Victoria was unsure what her view was on this whole war. She really did not wish to see the innocent hurt, but if they were not willing to bow down in front of the Dark Lord then they deserved to be punished. He was the way of the future, or so her father told her, and if one did not follow his path then they followed one to total annihilation. She pressed her slightly plump lips to the cool porcelain and once again began to sip at her tea in deep thought. She was unsure what her life held for her, but there was no way that she would betray her family. It couldn’t be done, at least that is what she tried to tell herself.
She was so nervous talking so frankly with Selena. She knew the other female might feel completely different than her on the subject and she did not want to lose her as a friend. Or worse yet, Selena could tell her parents Victoria’s view and it could get back to her own parents. She would be tossed out onto the street faster than she could repent. Her parents would never allow a blood traitor to live under their roof, and if her father was home when all of this went down she was sure that he would probably attempt to kill her. She knew, deep down, that her father loved her dearly, but his love for her was minuet in comparison to the love he had for the Dark Lord.
It she had not become so well trained at hiding her emotions, shock would have lit up her visage at the words of the other. So she agreed with her on that at least. It was a start. She was no where near telling the other female about her crush on a half-blood, let alone a half-blood Gryffindor. She was about to reach for her tea cup, but stopped upon hearing her friend continue. She folded her hands in her lap knowing whatever she was going to say had to be important for her to pause.
So Selena had the same fears that she had. She wondered just how many other sons and daughters of Death Eaters had those same fears. She knew Lucius and the Black family, aside for Sirius, had no fears and would be proud to wear the mark. She was sure Lucius already had it and she knew for a fact that Regulus Black had it. She had seen it once. He was a handsome boy and it would have made her parents proud for her to date him, but such was not what she wanted.
“I am not sure either.” She mumbled, her lips pursing for a moment before she continued on. “I mean, my mother follows him without the mark, so we could also. We won’t have to be his puppet in that manner. He can’t burn our skin to call us to meet with him. He would have to send a messenger like he does with my mother.” It was her turn to pause. “But that is still a little while away. I mean we have this whole year to worry about it, and then we can decide whether to get branded or not. There are a lot of witches and wizards who do not do such so they can do his bidding in the open without others suspecting.”
It was then it hit her that Selena probably meant she didn’t want to be a Death Eater at all. “You do not want to be one at all?” She let her gaze fall to her lap as she thought about the consequences that would befall either of them if they decided against it completely. “You would become a blood traitor, would you not? I mean…I am not sure if I want to be one either…but I do not know if I can live the rest of my life without my family and being branded such. Your life will be at immense risk if you betray your blood line.” These were all the thoughts and feelings that she had held in for the longest time. She needed to hear anothers opinion on them so that she could get past the idea of being a blood-traitor and losing her family for good.
